1. Royal History & Origins

Built under Royal Patronage: In 1933, Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar laid the foundation stone for the cathedral to show religious tolerance and respect for his Christian subjects.

Design Inspiration: Designed by a French architect named Dujardin, the cathedral was built in the grand Neo-Gothic style, drawing heavy inspiration from Europe’s medieval cathedrals.

The Saint: It was built in honor of Saint Philomena, a 3rd-century Latin Catholic saint and martyr.

2. Architectural Highlights

Soaring Twin Spires: The church features striking twin spires that rise to a height of 175 feet (53 meters), crowned with crosses visible from across the city.

Stained Glass Windows: The altar and nave feature stunning stained-glass windows imported directly from France, depicting key events in the life of Jesus Christ (including the Nativity, the Last Supper, and the Resurrection).

Catacomb Crypt: Beneath the altar lies an underground crypt (catacomb) housing a statue of St. Philomena in a reclining position, holding a relic of the saint.

Cruciform Floor Plan: Designed in the shape of a Holy Cross, with the altar representing the head, the nave the body, and the transepts the arms.
